How to Set Up a Proxy on a Router

Step-by-step proxy setup on a router: Keenetic, MikroTik and OpenWRT. What details you need, common mistakes and how to check if the proxy works.

Setting up a proxy on a router allows you to route internet traffic through one IP address. This is useful when you need to use the same proxy across multiple devices.

In this guide, we’ll explain which routers support proxies, what details are required, and what to do if the connection does not work.

Where to Find Proxy Details for Router Setup

After purchase, open your order in the dashboard. All connection details will be available there.

  • IP / Host — proxy server address
  • HTTP — connection port
  • SOCKS5 — alternative port
  • Login — username
  • Password — password

Which Routers Support Proxies

Not every router supports direct proxy connections. Advanced proxy settings are usually available in Keenetic, MikroTik and devices running OpenWRT.

Most standard home routers such as TP-Link and ASUS do not support direct proxy setup.

Step 1. Open Router Settings

Open your browser and go to 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1.

Then enter the administrator login and password.

Step 2. Find Proxy Settings

  • Keenetic → System → Proxy
  • MikroTik → IP → Proxy / Firewall
  • OpenWRT → network settings or additional packages

Step 3. Enter IP, Port, Login and Password

Paste the connection details from your dashboard.

  • IP address
  • Port
  • Login
  • Password
  • Proxy type: HTTP or SOCKS5

Step 4. Configure Traffic Rules

Choose which traffic should go through the proxy.

  • Entire network
  • Selected devices
  • Specific websites only

Why the Proxy Does Not Work on a Router

  • Router does not support proxies
  • Wrong proxy type selected
  • Incorrect login or password
  • Traffic rules are not configured
  • DNS goes directly
